The city, which dates back to the 1750s, takes its current name from General Nathanael Greene, who exhibited heroism during the War of Independence of the United States against the British. Greensboro's greatest gift to world literature is William Sydney Porter, who wrote short stories with the nickname of O. Henry. The world famous writer was born in 1862 in this city. The city, dominated by subtropical climate, has a hot and humid climate for most of the year. Piedmont Triad International Airport is 17.5 kilometers from the city.
